Creative solutions for shared spaces

who we are

Full Colour was founded in 2025 by Ruth, Andy and John. Drawing on decades of experience in project management, urban design, visual arts and landscaping, they focus on practical, place-based work in streets, parks and public spaces. Their work is rooted in collaboration, care and a belief in the everyday value of well-designed environments

what we do

Our approach blends practical skill with creative thinking to test ideas on the ground — quickly, collaboratively, and with care.We specialise small-scale, high-impact interventions that improve how public spaces are used, understood, and shared. Our projects are rooted in strong design, local knowledge and close dialogue with communities and partners. With a track record of delivering well-made, imaginative and useful work, we help communities unlock the potential of their places — without waiting for long-term masterplans.
This can be called placemaking, or tactical urbanism

Case Study:
Full Colour Maindee

As project manager and curator of Full Colour Maindee, we led the initiative from concept through to completion, embedding ourselves within the community to co-design a dynamic, inclusive arts programme. Our approach was rooted in deep collaboration—partnering with local artists, residents, and businesses to ensure that every element of the project resonated with Maindee’s unique identity. We managed all stages of delivery, from securing funding and commissioning site-specific artworks to curating events that celebrated the area’s rich cultural diversity. By prioritising accessibility and participation, we transformed underused spaces into vibrant landmarks, catalysing pride and engagement across the neighbourhood. The project’s success was evident not only in its immediate visual and social impact but also in its lasting legacy. Full Colour Maindee became a catalyst for ongoing community-led regeneration, sparking continued investment in creative placemaking initiatives. The relationships we fostered and the organisational model we established laid a sustainable foundation for future projects—proving that with thoughtful curation and agile project leadership, art can be a powerful force for local transformation.

What Is Placemaking?

Placemaking is the process of creating quality public spaces that promote people's well-being, health, and happiness by involving communities in shaping their environment.
It's a collaborative approach that focuses on maximizing shared value by capitalizing on local assets and potential. Placemaking can involve planning, design, and management of spaces, and it brings together diverse stakeholders to improve a community's cultural, economic, social, and environmental situation.
Community-driven:
Placemaking is not a top-down approach. It emphasizes community participation and collaboration to ensure that the resulting spaces meet the needs and aspirations of the people who will use them.
People-centric:
It's about creating spaces that foster positive emotions, encourage social interaction, and promote a sense of belonging and pride.
Holistic:
Placemaking considers all aspects of a space, including its design, location, infrastructure, and services, as well as its cultural and social context.
Dynamic:
Placemaking is not a static process. It's an ongoing effort to adapt and improve spaces over time to meet changing needs and preferences.
Beyond physical space:
While physical spaces are a key element, placemaking can also encompass digital spaces and virtual experiences.
Examples:
Placemaking can be seen in various initiatives, such as community gardens, public art installations, streetscape improvements, and the creation of vibrant public squares.
Key elements:
Some common elements of successful placemaking include: Accessibility: Easy access for all ages and abilities. Safety and comfort: Creating a welcoming and secure environment.
Sense of place:
Fostering a connection between people and the environment.
Activities and amenities:
Providing reasons for people to visit and stay.
